I have recessed downlighters in an extension off the kitchen fitted with R80 100W ES Reflector Bulbs. These bulbs 'blow' and need replaced every few weeks.
I am told variously that.....I should fit dimmer switches.....I should fit a transformer...to extend the life of the bulbs.
Does anyone have experience or knowledge of this.......or is it just 'urban legend'?

bulbs will often fail if they overheat, is there a gap around them in the roof space?

ehat make are they and where did you get them?

Thanks,'breezer'...yes the manufacturers guidelines in respect of "minimum ceiling void" and clearance of insulation material etc. were met and I have tried a variety of bulbs....from supermarket to high price.

It was mainly the idea of using a transformer without altering the bulb voltage, or using a dimmer switch, which I couldn't understand and wondered if anyone else had been similarly advised and whether it had worked!

a 1:1 transformer would cost you a fortune and wouldnt solve the problem. A dimmer switch would give the lamps a "soft start"

How long are the lamps on for in total?
