Is this dangerous or normal????

Hi, I have a 6ft tall larder fridge, i was moving it the other day and i noticed water on the floor? When i looked behind the fridge, at the very bottom at the back there seems to be some kind of big plastic pot! It's properly fixed into the fridge so it is meant to be there, but this pot was full and overflowing with water. The water was running on all the parts etc and the wires so it can't be a good thing. As i bought this second hand i have no come back on it, but it was not cheap. Does anyone know if this is normal or should it have some kind of lid etc. I am moving soon so all this water is going to spill everywhere once the unit is moved.

This is the automatic defrosting / deicing system that your fridge uses to keep itself efficient.
The pot you refer to collects condensate (water) from the inside rear wall of the fridge, and the contents are supposed to evaporate due to the heat from the compressor that the pot sits on.
You've more condensate there than the fridge can cope with for some reason....maybe its due to the door seals not being as efficient as they should be, frequent opening of the door or simply food in there with some excess moisture.
Either way, just bale the pot out with a sponge when you want to move the fridge.
John :)

Did you defrost it recently, or in the habit of not closing door correctly, both could increase the water draining into the rear evaporation tray

Thank you for your reply John, i think you dead right on that one. I constantly keep noticing the door is slightly open, so this is going to cause the condensation then. I have to keep going back to the fridge and pushing the door hard.
Thank you,

Carolyn

You might want to check that it's vertical or leaning back very slightly. If it leans forward, the door may not be so keen to close!

There should be some adjustable feet to help you level it (if necessary). Otherwise, use the equivalent of a beer mat under the feet. :D

Hi John, it does not need defrosting as its a 6ft tall fridge. I never thought of it being slightly tilted forward so will check that out.
Thank you very much for your good advice.x
