is it necessary to change a old fuse board with rewirable 3036 fuses which is in good working condition for a new board or is it ok to change the carriers to take m.c.b's and keep the same board. thanks for any advice

There is no requirement for either. But, if you are buying replacement MCB's, it won't cost much more to buy a new split load board.

A lot of people just change to MCBs.

A more important question is the age and condition of the CU and the electrical installation generally; and what sort of earthing and Bonding it has.

Is your old CU brown or cream?

Have you been getting many blown fuses?

Can you post a pic of the CU and the area around it, inluding the supplier's fuse and meter?

edited to correct speling

IMO it is a good idea to replace the CU regardless, if just for the reason so that you can RCD protect any socket outlets and shower circuits etc...
