Gap under plasterboard

sorry...

how tall is your skirting board? 4" 6"?

you might entertain a one or two inch gap but this will have no bearing whatsoever on any 'rising damp' issues.

what sort of building is it? wooden? stone? brick?

No you didn't say anything funny. It's just that there is an ongoing debate on here about whether rising damp even exists within brickwork.

A 2" gap is adequate. You can use some timber of that width to rest your plasterboard on as you fix it and take the timber away afterwards.

The reason for the gap is so the board doesnt sit in any water that might be there through dripping condensation or spillage. You could even fill the gap afterwards with spray foam before you fix the skirting.
