I want to paint existing metal garage door white (currently brown). Do I have to use a specialised garage door or metal paint or will ordinary gloss do it? thanks for any answers
Also will I be best applying it with a roller or paintbrush?

No reason to use proper garage door paint.

Sand down to a flat, clean surface.
Prime any bare metal with calcium plumbate primer or similar.
You will need at least white undercoats to cover the brown if it's quite dark.
Do not skimp on the number of undercoats, only gloss when the door is a strong white colour with minimal streaks showing through.

There isn't much worse than streaky gloss work, so make the effort.

You can use a gloss roller, but you will probably need to use a brush as well for the ridges.

Non-drip gloss may be easier for you to use with a brush, as the title suggests.

How do you know he's not painting it brown again?

If he's going for a dark colour he wants dark grey - not white.

Missed a word out, meant to say you will need at least TWO white undercoats.
