My wife and I want to reduce our work in the garden by adding additional decking to butt up to the existing decking of our summer house.

The area is 6 metres by 1.5 metres i.e 9 sq metres and the bearers will sit directly on the ground. Some soil will need to be removed to get a level and this will be put elsewhere into the garden.

Because we can't do the work ourselves i have had a quote of £1100 which seems a bit on the high side as one of the online decking calculation sites suggested about £400 for all the material including weed membrane, decking, bearers, support posts, cement & screws.

Wonder if anyone could work out what I would need, with likely cost if possible so I have some comparison with the quote.

Thanks in anticipation.

online calculators are useless and only serve to make people feel they are getting ripped off and **** off tradesmen by giving people a wildly false idea of what work will cost.

As above just get two more quotes

If materials are £400 then you're paying for labour at £700. (Let's ignore all other expenses for now.) How long did they say the job would take, and how many of them will be working? If there are two of them and they worked properly for 2.5-3 days the quote sounds about right: roughly £150 a day for the builder and £100 a day for a labourer.
