idea: just about to add electric to my garden shed at the bottom of my garden (around 30 metes from house) and I have been told ,as I am going to be using a 3k/w plug in pool heater on this extension that I should connect the extension to the main consumer unit and it should have a separate fuse (all sound good)
but then I had an idea  as I don't use my electric cooker power point in the kitchen could I run the out door extension on this ,sound good to me as I know its suitable for high demand appliances and I am sure this has its own fuse and would be on a different ring to the rest of the power in the house, also it very close to the outside wall to run the extension
is this really possible or do you think I am a complete nut!
please don't be too rude
thanks for you help in advance.
kind regards Tracey

Yes it's possible, but I guarantee not in the way that you are thinking.

Do a search here for shed, garage, outbuilding, outhouse, workshop, garden etc - there is a wealth of info on the topic.

just curious as to what you mean by it can be done but not in the way im thinking.
i was thinking of wireing up the 6mm armoured cable at the cooker electrical point and drilling a hole in my kitchen and feeding the cable outside and digging it into a trench all the way to the bottom of the garden.
possiblely even putting a separate cut out switch behind the cooker before attaching the armoured cable
best wishes tracey

Buy a copy of the IEE guide to the building regs.

What protective device do you have?

Referring to P48.....

If using thermosetting (white) cable with Installation Method 1 (clipped direct) and a 30A BS3036 fuse, then you can run out to your garden up to 40m using 6mm2, assuming your supply is either PME or TNS. The only criteria is that your EFLI should be no more than 0.91 Ohm if your cooker point has a socket outlet, or 2.21 Ohm if not.

Tell us what supply and protective device you have, and what type of cable is used to supply the cooker point.

IMPORTANT: THIS CALCULATION ASSUMES THAT THERE IS 6mm2 THERMOSETTING CABLE SUPPLYING THE COOKER POINT.

Apologies - you used the word "extension", and using the cooker circuit - I thought you were planning to plug an extension lead in...

You'll need an adaptable box on the wall - you won't be able to terminate SWA in the cooker circuit outlet box....

and drilling a hole in my kitchen and feeding the cable outside and digging it into a trench all the way to the bottom of the garden.
The depth should be sufficient to prevent any disturbance of the ground reasonably likely to occur during normal use of the premises. Hence, a cable to outbuildings installed under a concrete path could be at 400 mm, whilst if running through a cultivated space which could be subject to double digging would be less likely to disturbance if buried at 700 mm.
