Hi All,

I am hoping to have some garden lights fitted. I know this is a job for a qualified electrician (so i will be calling one in the future) but i like to know what needs to be done before calling them out.

At my old house i had a plug with a transformer on and then the cables went outside. I would like a more proffesional installation this time (maybe even wired to the consumer unit). What is the best way of having outdoor lightening and where do the transformers go?

Thanks

Hello jtownson.

As Steve has said, it's pretty hard to figure out what will be involved, depending on what type (etc) of lighting you are after.

It is hard to judge how your electrician will 'tackle this task' without knowing what is involved. Maybe calling a few 'Sparks' and getting them around to give you a quote is what you need (they will explain what they intend to do etc). We may have different installation techniques.
At worst, prepare for some digging maybe. , but even this, your 'Spark' will want to inspect.

All the best.

Are you sure you want lightening?

It can be brighter that customers are expecting, and the electric bill is huge.

I did some for a customer recently, and they had it taken back out as it was to bright.

oooh nice RF, a few million volts was it? would love to see the specs for that job. how big was the tx?

I made the tx out of some old welders.

Works well don't you think :)

Unless an outside light is attached to the house wall, I would go for low voltage every time. In the past, this meant either a big, beefy transformer and heavy wire or else you put up with puny lights. LEDs have changed all that. They work on low voltage and give a lot of light from a modest current. 8) 8) 8)
