please help!!
i have a 19yr old valiant boiler, i had it changed over from bottled gas to mains gas approx 9yrs ago, i have never had any problems with it and it looks like the day it was installed, even inside so a plumber said, parts are still readily available.
in the past 3 or 4 months occasionally when its trying to light it knocks itself off, when i push the button with the red warning light back in, it lights perfectly and works again for weeks, the water pressure seems to drop to nothing about every 3 weeks, but its not consistant, i can hear air in the sysytem, have tried every bleeder i can find without any joy.
this past week i can smell gas in the morning, i had a plumber out yesturday and he said cant be fixed change the boiler and wanted a huge amount of money to do so. the smell of gas this morning almost chocked me when i got up,it wasnt smelling during the day but it is now, do i really need a new boiler and if so can anyone recogmend a good one for less than 2k which is what he said a new one will cost me.

IF YOU SMELL GAS TURN OFF THE SUPPLY
find a competent installer to rectify the problem.from your description i do not think your boiler is beyond repair a bit of cash and tlc should see it soldier on for a wee while longer.start saving for the inevitable new boiler.

I'd like to echo the above post - it is better to be cold than dead.

Turn off the gas supply and don't turn it back on until the leak is fixed!

thanx for your advise today, i called him back and he hadnt closed the inlet valve lastnight when he was testing the gass pressure, scary !!!

 . weve all done it. we may not admit it but we have. at least he's owned up to it. if you can afford it i'd suggest going for a new one if you can.

if you want the same sort of quality that you have now, that is the sort of money that you are looking at.
if you need a new gaspipe, valves, controls, it could well be more.
