gas cooker too hot??

We have had a new stainless steel gas range cooker installed this week and turned it on today for the first time. l was shocked to find that the whole cooker including the top/front/sides got very very hot all over.
Is this the norm or is it faulty?. l really won't feel safe using it and want to contact the supplier asap tomorrow, awaiting reply eagerly
