hi. replacing my gas fire. i wish to fit a hole in wall type gas fire, but i have been told my precast flue is not ok for this type of fire. the flue is on a party wall. the fire will sit in asort of false chimney 300mm. so can the fire just have the duct coming out at 90 deg and connect with the flue ?

Have you a particular fire in mind, and have you spoken to a RGI?

got a few in mind they are the hole in the wall type sizes are approx 900 mm wide and 600mmhigh, the ones with a living flame. they all seam to be only for chimney or a balanced flue ?

No, you can't do as you suggest. There isn't a proper HIW fire to fit a pre cast flue, unless it has a large fireplace opening, some of which have appeared over the last couple of years.

There are smaller HIW/HOW fires advertised as suitable for PC flues, but the starter block is normally far too low to accomoate.

I am guessing that you are researching on the 'net. You are wasting your time. You need to resolve to use a proper shop or at least an RGI who will advise, but remember that the "free" advice cost them money and time so don't take the pi55.

thanks for the info. could it be possible to raise the starter blocks say 600mm approx say rebuild the bottom starter blocks to accomadate the fire at that height ?

altering the pre-cast as you propose would be Very unlikely to be viable!! as you have been told you need to consult a specialist gas fire showroom with an installation department!

just a thought, would i be correct in saying the starter blocks are to low for a hole in the wall fire if the fire is fitted say 4 ft high. surely a builder or gas tech whoever could rebuild the starter blocks in a higher position on a sort of wall ?

cheers, i found this fire it says i has a precast flue option ?

How old is your flue? Pre 1986 is not likely top be suitable. If you go through the download procedure, you wil find a statement to say that the flue starter box must be raised to a suitable height. To be fair to them, it is the first time I've seen this mentioned on sales brochures!

You will need a builder working under the advbice of our chosen RGI. Good luck with that!

Before buying off the 'net, and especially these specialised fires, make sure you have an available RGI prepared, able and EXERIENCED to carry out the work.

Also, before purchasing ANY FIRE of the 'net - 'phone the manufacturer. Ask them what the warranty arrangements are:

How do you claim
Is it direct labour, or a local guy
Do yu guarantee a response time..

In addition, for Brilliant in particular, ask how much a new Corian trim wouldcost if it cracked under heat, and wether that would be covered under warranty

I promise you that you will be surprised by the answers to all the above questions.

Gasllery, for example will not offer after sales service - and bizzarely, they don't have to, your contract is with your supplier.

We get customers coming into our shop asking us to fit products sourced of the 'net. We tel them politely to go forth............

Just remembered that you intend to fit a false chimney breast?

300 mm is probably too deep, but if you built it in brick or solid block, you MAY not need to alter flue. You really do need on site advice.

If you were in my area, and you asked me to advise, I would ask for a order and deposit for the job, and would charge/retain a fee for the consultation, in the event of you not ultimately buying the fire of us. We are sick of time wasting internet purchasers. Interestingly, you have already received lots of free and good avice on this forum, but you obviously feel unabkle to get required advice from 'net sellers.
