Whats the best thing to seal a gas hob to the work top
they never supply enough of the bluetac like compound to do the job properly
Ive tried Perymatious but this wasn't very successful either

Some manufacturers supply a coil of sticky backed foam sealant strip, similar to the kind you can get for draught proofing(windows and doors)but usually denser.Stick it to the countertop at the edge of the hole, less messy and easier to remove hob in future.Try an ironmongers or DIY store.

Your RGI will be able to advise you.

Not sure that I could.

Some makers supply a sealing strip or compound. Others dont.

I am not sure its too important anyway. Any slight gap will rapidly get filled with oil and dirt.

Perhaps some clear silicone?

What do others do?

Officially Gas Safe Register disapprove of silicone because the hob can not then be easily removed for maintenance. It must also be fixed using the manufacturer's clamps.

Presumably they think a knife blade doesn't unstick a line of silicone and the hob will fly across the room if not bolted down.

I don't actually find a problem with the blu-tack strip. Trimmed vertically and smoothed with a penknife blade it's quick neat and easy. Offcuts can then fill any gaps.
