Hi

I've done quite a lot of searching and can't find an answer to this sorry if its a stupid question but I'm pretty desperate!

The new gas hob installation instructions say that it must be located at least 10cm from existing furniture. However, 6cm to the left is a high cupboard enclosing the fridge.

My builder thinks it can be protected with tiles making it "not furniture" any more. I really pray this is possible because the corgi guy wil arrive in a couple of days and presumably he can just say "no its not safe rip out your kitchen, plan and buy a new one and start again!!".

This is where your corgi is expected to use his "engineering judgement".
In this case I would judge that a dorkwazzok wrote the manual, and it should have said "flammable" surfaces, or something similar.

In my opinion tiles would be ok, I've also used a nicely finished sheet of brushed Stainless Steel in similar circumstances, which is easier to clean and neater.

Unfortunately, whilst some people might use an engineering judgement, CORGI themselves do not apply any leeway to the regulations.

The new hob should be notified to CORGI and if they choose to inspect it then they will condem it as unsafe because it is not installed in accordance with the regulations.

Not leeway, but judgement, They do it all the time. Sometimes the regulations aren't strict enough.

OK then CORGI apply a black and grey judgement.

If it does not meet the regulations then they say its wrong!

Even if it does meet the regulations they sometimes also say its wrong as well.

If by "regulations" you mean anything ever put in writing by anyone, you're wrong. I have examples in writing. I've lost track of how many examples I could quote.

The legally binding Regulation (GSIUR) says things have to be SAFE. Even the BS's aren't law.

Even if it does meet the regulations they sometimes also say its wrong as well.
Of course. If they think something isn't safe they can give their opinion, but that's all it is. If you do something in accordance with some instruction which in a particular case is not safe you deserve to be hung for it.

If you can demonstrate that something is safe, Corgi keep quiet.
