Gas meter black wire

A four core about 20cm x 2mm black cable is attached to the numeric dial area of my meter. It does not extend to anything. There is no connection plug on it, as at first I thought it may be for reading.
Could somebody tell me what purpose it serves, please?

Just a data cable that 'could' be connected to phone cable so you meter could be read remotely. Not in use as far as I know.
