Hello

We currently have oil heating and are looking to get a gas supply to the house. My hubby thinks the rules have changed and the gas meter box would have to be situated on an external wall outside? Ideally we would like it in the garage.
I can't find any information on the current regulations - can anyone help please?
Thanks

Claire

there are no regs demanding a meter is outside but the gas supplier will decide based on survey and what is better for them, however with some discussion they may accomodate your request, if it is possible and it may add to the cost

Be aware National Grid Gas have taken 4 months to get round to installing a supply for a friend of mine. Order (and payment taken) beginning of December 2010, planned completion date is 25th March 2011.... They wont hurry themselves......

Thanks for the replies :)

Thats good to know there are no regs. We aren't in any big rush to get it done (as long as its before next winter!) - we've just got a new tank of oil which should see us until October (fingers crossed!).

Thanks

My gas meter is in my dining room - in a locked cupboard and with very shiny unions. ;)

my mum had a gas meter in her kitchen and you had to get on a pair of steps to read it,up until recently :)
she had enquired about having it moved a few years back but was told it was going to cost a few quid to do it,then a couple of months back the gas board had the main up in the road and the pipe leading to her house was in a very bad state, apparently everytime they attempted to make a new connection it broke, anyway they ended up renewing the gas supply to the house and when they took a looksie in the house they said IT HAD TO BE MOVED UNDER H/SAFTY  RESULT,nice new meter in a box outside and it cost my mum sod all for the privillage

Thinking back, when Transco (as was) came out to a leak at my house (that they caused changing the meter....), the guy said ideally the meter needed to be moved as all pipework inside the property needs to be able to be isolated in the event of an escape.

Existing service, governor and pipe from governor to meter date from town gas days, never been changed. Until it starts leaking they wont do anything with it...
