Hi guys, could do with some help on a matter i came across the other day!

Im providing power via generator (3kva) to a site cabin. The cabin will only be powering a couple of lights and most importantly kettle! Ive installed an earth rod for the cabin and want to obtain a Ze reading! And here is were the problem lies. I can not obtain a reading via my meter, which i understand that to be the meter is detecting a fault due to the voltage inbalance from the generator being all over the place. How do i get round this?

Would be really grateful of any information you guys have, cheers

:)

A gen of 3kva or under are generally 'IT' earthing - The neutral is not tied down to earth in the alternator, and and as such, there is no 'earth loop' to read. Putting a rod down also serves no purpose.

You can connect the Neutral to Earth at the generator to form a TN system, and this point of connection should then be rodded down. You should first check with the gen manufacturer that this is acceptable for that generator.

Presumably this is a single phase 230V generator?

What is the earth rod connected to?

Where is the neutral from the generator connected?

Thanks for the fast posts! Yes its a single phase, the earth rod goes directly to the earth bar in the CU in the cabin.Ive also earthed the frame work of the generator! I will check with the manufacture on this,so if all is fine im thinking take the supply from the generator into a suitable box with a Neutral link inside, which my earth with be connected to and obtain reading on that level!?
What do think :?:
