Hi My friend has a USB connected speedtouch modem which goes off line when idle. I seem to remember their was a option to disable this feature somewhere but cant find it. Long time since I dealt with basically a dial up modem

Why keep a modem online, when the modem is offline? and not receiving data? What are they accessing via the modem? not web pages? but packets of radio? Read radio packets data for commands?
seriously your friend needs to ditch that piece of junk. I had one and replaced it with an ADSL modem/wireless router and my download speeds have doubled! Hook the router up to your ethernet port, no USB driver crap required.
