My golf broke down the other day 1.8 petrol 1991 called AA to fix theres a strange electrical fault that he was baffled by he checked all the ht system and sparks, coil.dist fuel pump etc but was unable to get it going.
When the ignition key is turned to its FIRST position before starting a loud electrical ticking is heard from the engine, why is the happening when i havnt even turned the car to start ! the car wont even start with easy start with the air filter removed, anyone help, cheers.

Could well be the ignition switch playing up. Its a known problem on the Mk2

Cheers neo, ive got a switch from my vw dealer £20 im gonna do it myself any tips on how to change it mate, thanks for the quick reply !

Im pretty sure the whole lock assembly needs taking off the column, then there is a screw which hides up underneath to hold the switch on.
It may be possible to do it without taking lock off but i dont think so.

Steering wheel, cowling and indicator/wiper stalks will probably have to come off as lock/switch slides over the column.

If you make a mess of it i've got a complete lock and switch assembly on my desk looking for a new home
