heres one for debate.i was taught off two oldschool plumbers both wich are still members of the IPHE and were corgi, but got sick off the constant money making of corgi, iv seen a lot of posts on this site wich points towards the point that if your not corgi your useless and shouldnt do anything to do with gas.but does that mean, say a 21 year old with corgi is more responsable than a guy whos 60 been doing installations e.t.c all his life, but cant be bothered with corgis money making scams

who would you think. the one who is law abiding or the one who is breaking the law.none of us want to pay for corgi but the law states that we have to if we want to work on gas. i doubt any legitamate engineer would call anyone useless without convincing evidence.

IMO All CORGI does is prove that you have sat some exams and you are trained to recognise unsafe situations

no more no less

so no being CORGI does not prove your are good

thats not to say that you dont need CORGI to work on gas for money though

Whether we like it or not Corgi has driven standards up and made installers accountable, and deaths from CO have been greatly reduced during Corgi's lifetime. It was the unacceptable level of deaths from CO that led to Corgi being set up in the first place Some people didn't like this encroachment on their freedom of operation.

On the other hand, Corgi is a company, its a bureaucracy, its big brother, and it can prosecute you and take your living away,,so we all love to hate Corgi even though deep down we know that if it wasn't Corgi doing this it would be some other..possibly worse body. Its a job that needs doing as we all slip into bad ways over time..don't anybody deny it.

Whats that old saying "Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill".. I think you have to judge each operative on their merits.Age is irrelevent, you will get good and bad at each end of the age spectrum. I work with some young guys who are just fantastically motivated and competent.

I do however think that Corgi operates a restrictive practice which may possibly be illegal. I'm only Corgi reg when i work for my employer. At weekends I'm not Corgi reg and membership is too expensive to make it worthwhile me registering for occasional weekend gas work. In effect they are preventing a competent person from using that competence, which i believe is a restrictive practice.

That being said, whenever I have telephoned them for advice they have always tried to be as helpful as possible, and the people on the end of the technical line have many years field experience between them. I think they are trying to be more user friendly. However, human nature dictates the threat of the big stick will regrettably always be necessary. I've never yet seen a voluntary code that works..there's always some who opts out or cheats..you can't afford that in gas work.
I think Corgi has done much to improve the image of gas work in the UK, and correspondingly our setup is admired by some other countries who struggle to control gas cowboys...who kill people
