hello, i am in the tricky position of having lost the services of the local boiler engineer at present. my grant boiler trips out after a second or two. having downloaded a manual after advice from this site a couple of things might not be right , the gap between the electrodes is 4.5mm and should be 4mm ideally. can the gap be adjusted? or is it time for a new electrode unit? the nozzle has 80H stamped on it but the manaul states a 75/80S should be fitted? the boiler exhaust was very smelly for two days before it shut down, i could not see smoke but i could smell the fumes almost as if it was running rich.
at present i am trying to proves that the nozzle is not blocked , as the jet hole is so small i have shone a light down it but cant see any light coming through, is there a better way to detect a blockage?

cheers for all help, where can i get spares from ?

yea replace the nozzle, when was it last serviced tho? oil boilers are very sensitive to there settings, the critical air/fuel ratio may need tuning if you were getting a smell.

The hole in a nozzle is very small and you can't poke them out without causing damage. 0.5mm out on the spark gap shouldn't be a problem. Get the nozzle changed but then the burner will need to be set up correctly. This requires gear that your not going to have around the house. The OFTEC website will have details of technicians in your area.

You can get a .75/80 s nozzle, (part number 362910) or a .75/80 es nozzle, (part number 262910) from heating-parts specialists...they could probably help with the electrodes too, but 0.5mm wear on them can be accommodated.
Its not recommended that nozzles are taken apart.

.............my grant boiler trips out after a second or two.

Does the burner actually light up?

Does it trip out before it actually fires?

Can you hear the electrodes buzzing during the light up sequence?

Can you hear the click of the oil valve opening?

hello, to the best of my knowledge the burner did not light, it trip out straight away, i am not sure about the electrodes or the oil valve opening, can i place my hand on the burner to feel the click of the oil valve during start up?

cheers

When you turn on the burner does the motor spin? how far into the start up sequence does the burner go? turn on the power to the burner and if the lockout light is on press it and tell us what happens? Burner wont lockout until it attemps to fire first.
