Have an area of old laid tarmac, use to park cars on etc. It's in good condition, but I don't like the look of it.

I would like to have a gravel area instead.

I'm presuming I can't just put gravel on top of the tarmac? thinking of granite chipping 20mm ish.

Would gravel grids work, or would it be better to rip up the tarmac and lay onto the hardcore/rubble underneath?

TIA

A mate of mine wanted to gravel the paved sections of his back garden.

He made a slurry using waterproof tile adhesive.

It worked quite well.

Not sure if it will work with tarmac though.

I believe that resin-bonded gravel can be laid over tarmac, or at least the companies selling the stuff claim it can. It will flex, so can cope with the tarmac flexing beneath it.

I have my doubts about the stuff though, it's permeable so rainwater will be trapped within it on top of the tarmac. So it may end up wet or frost damaged. If laid from scratch it's normally on top of a porous surface.
