my project is nothing spectacular, I'm just an amateur needing a little help. I aim to build grip balls similar to these:

ideally from baseball ball (wanted wood at first, but wooden balls get expensive as the diameter increases). I thought I could drill a hole in the ball and use an eye bolt, but I want to be able to comfortably grab the balls from below and the nut could hurt the palm. Instead, I would like, if possible, the same system washer + "?". Could you tell me what it is called or give me an alternative fastening, please?
