I was wondering if anybody else is experiencing difficulties with this type of heating due to the cold weather that we are having at the moment?

What problems are you having? Not frosting of the condensing unit is it?...

Probably finding its using the electric/aux heat backup pretty much constantly at the minute.

This is when we discover how well designed the ground source systems are or have the installers cut a corner or two.... Air source will spend a lot more time in defrost.... Yep, the electric heaters will be running more but this is to be expected...

The units are just putting out enough heat and are having difficulty meeting demand during the cold weather.
I've been delivering fan heaters today.
This cold snap that the country is currently experiencing is just what we didn't need!

What back up heating has been provided? Electric? Oil? LPG? Heat pumps are good for the majority of the year, but there will always be short times of the year when they cannot cope.... In the case of air source, are the condensers free of snow and is there enough air flow round them?

What type of system do you have? Ground source or air source? The topic title isn't really specific. If it's the former, I'm surprised to hear that you're having problems with the cold weather - the burial depth of the ground loop is supposed to be such that the temperature at that depth is (more or less) constant throughout the year.

Hense my comment on poor design or corner cutting...
