evening again!
called out to a central heating system not warming up this aft, and to cut a story short, the pump wasnt pumping correctly. removal found the impellor spinning freely on the rotor.
questions i now have are;
a) anyone know where i get one before monday to get them heating back on,
b) how is the impellor fastened to the rotor, for the possibility of a temporary fix
c) is this a common problem?

cheers all
neil

I doubt you'll get one off the shelf of anywhere open on Sundays...

I thought the impeller was attached simply by pressure (squared whole pushed onto the shaft)

You might fix it with epoxy or something, but you might have trouble getting impeller balanced.

Or of course I could be talking a7se water...

Have come across this before, all indications were the pump was running but wouldnt shift the water. New pump fitted, off we went. Try Screwfix trade counters, they should be open Sunday's, weather permitting..... Would presume they'll have a pump in stock, they do a range of them.

change the pump

???

yeah ok, so read the questions?

cheers for the advise anyway.....

i did read the question

you really inspire confidence posting on a diy forum OK

try Q&B

i wont help you on sunday but i've found a company called H&V Controls to be very useful when sourcing the rarer grundy models, they tend to have them on the shelf their nearest branch to you is either burnley or aldridge, they might be able to same-day-it to you

Because I am 100% focussed on customer service and getting systems working again, I would have made it work for the moment with what I carry.

I would have fitted a 15-60 as a temporary stopgap until a replacement was available. They are about £240 plus carriage by the way.

Depending on the installation, I would wonder if such a large pump is needed anyway.

Possibly two 15-60s in parallel would be sufficient and half the price and still have redundancy if one failed.

As another possibility,

The pump used in the Sine 18 is marked VP5ZE ?

Could this be the same pump head fitting?

being customer focused also, but not a plumber, i made it work by re attaching the impellor to the rotor. after the strip and rebuild with a bit of epoxy, the customer was informed of the repair and is expecting a replacement early in the week. refitted unit at 10 pm sat night to which the customer was extremely greatful, not expecting anything other than a cold house till monday. (its still pumping, sun 1pm)

as for the size questions, its a large 5 bed detatched house with rads and underfloor heating plus dhw through a cylinder. boiler is remote to house, oil fired, with all controls in same room. (3 x 3 ports valves, timeclock, all stat return cabling etc) unfortunately didnt take a pic of it all, as its a nice looking job. apparently it was owned / built by a heating engineer prior to the presant occupants buying, (2 year ago), so surprised that no duty / standby pump was installed.

customer advised of potential pump price, to reply with "well we need one so we'll pay whatever it is"

didnt expect it to be a long thread as it will all be sorted when the wholesalers re open mon!

where are they? not heard of them over here

rather insulting considering your response to the original "question"!

i'll leave it at that....

Nice to know my idea worked - cheers...

lol, sorry forgot i'd read your post! (was more infuriated with the ps bit!)

integral the impellor which is polycarbonate is a steel ring which is a push fit onto the rotor. the steel ring had come adrift from the impellor. i managed to get this out and fully epoxy back in place. sounded alright with balance too!

cheers!

Thats a classic result of a lack of water causing the pump to run free and overheat as its no longer being cooled by the pumped water.

Whit that size of house I would possibly have used two 15-60 pumps for the different zones.

Certainly I would have based in installation on standard cheaper components.

cheers for the replies, new pump in and working. btw, the repair held on the old pump, which was left on site just in case!

next problem he has is the programmer. no instructions on how to use it, but i'll stick that in a new thread. (maxirex D programmer instuctions req)
