If you know the reg no but not the make, DVLA won't tell you, but RAC and some online insurers will.

So try
http://www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/dvla_lookup/

This will also tell you if the old personal reg no from your Morris Marina, for example, is now on a Porsche.
