Evening all,

I have been having problems with the sink in my kitchen for around two months. Sometimes it is quite slow to drain, but not always. The biggest problem is that there is a frequent loud gurgling, sometimes accompanied by a drainy smell. It can last for up to 15 mins.

It doesn't seem connected in any way to what I'm doing in my flat (which is at the bottom of a four-storey block). I called some plumbers out who spent around 30 mins using an auger and some hydrochloric acid to unblock it, and they said it was fixed but the next day I had the same thing again and it has continued since. When they showed me what they removed from the pipes it seemed very insignificant and so I'm not sure that a blockage was the problem.

I really don't have any money to call out a plumber again, especially as the last time it cost me £130 and didn't solve the problem at all. I'm utterly skint - is it a problem I can try to solve myself at all? Is it indicative of something serious, or can I just ignore the gurgle until I have a bit of cash?

I've lived in the property for over 3 years, and have never had a problem until around 6 weeks ago. The only other thing I can think of is that it might have coincided with some work that was done in the basement/garage of the building, which is presumably where the drains run to? Most of the work was decorative only, but could they have blocked an external drain that is now causing a problem? I've asked neighbours if they have had a problem but they don't seem to so far.

Any help would be really, really appreciated!
Thanks

Where does the waste pipe from your sink actually go out to?

£130 for 30 mins. work  You must be in London. Can you get a picture on here of wastepipe under sink. -A Hep V O waste valve would work instead of the trap . If it could be installed in the pipe run.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not sure where the wastepipe goes, but I'm currently trying to find out from someone with a lot more nous in these things than me! As for pics, I'll try to add one of the pipes from the front, and one from the side in case that helps. Thanks.

Oh, and it has gone mental with rain in London for the last hour or so, and the gurgling has also gone a bit barmy. Not sure if they are related but thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for the help - it's much appreciated!
