Guttering and drainpipe leaking

Hi everyone,

I noticed the other day our drainpipe out the front of the house was leaking. We've not had this place long and this was noticed on the survey, but the seller claimed it had been repaired (lesson learnt there).

I've had a look at it, and the pipework seemed to have come loose. I tried to push it back together, but it actually appears to be too short for both ends to properly meet. There's also no stop end on the pipe at the wall, which is causing stains on the wall.

I looked up the parts on Screwfix, but since I know jack about this sort of thing, I thought I'd post and get some expert opinions on this. Am I going to run into trouble if I just buy the like for like parts? Although the job sounds straightforward, is this something a DIY'er should tackle or just call someone out? I'd rather do it myself as I'm a bit broke and I'd have to wait a few weeks to pay someone.

I've attached pics and these are the screwfix parts I was looking at

I'm not sure if I will need these or not (just in case I mess something up)

Thanks in advance

your list looks about right.

you will need some downpipe as the swan neck is made of 2no bends with a length of straight in between, which is too short it seems in the pic.

I hope you can get to the gutter brackets.

You might be best to replace the downpipe brackets as they tend to get brittle

Thanks Notch, good to know I'm on the right track

I'm probably going to pop up Wickes tonight and grab the bits, I don't like them but it is nearer my house and I can just get it done.

I'll buy the extra downpipe because it's only a few quid, but is the length of pipe that connects the swan neck to the stop end outlet not one of these? https://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-socket-68mm-white/52689

Thats a socket. Generally it goes in this order:

Gutter stop end Outlet
Socket
Bit of downpipe
112 deg bend
Bit of downpipe
112 degree bend
Full length of downpipe.

Each fitting joins to downpipe not to another fitting

I cant remember off hand if the gutter outlet needs a socket or takes downpipe -socket, I think.

Thanks, good to know, I'd have missed the bits of downpipe inbetween the fittings had you not said that.

That's almost certainly the problem I have now then, the two 112 degree bend pipes go directly into each other. No downpipe inbetween.

It looks like your main rainwater pipe has dropped a
couple of inches and if you grab the pipe and twist it
in your hands with upward force it might bring it all
back together.

What catlad said really. You don’t need to buy anything. Once the pipe is raised it all comes together. If the sleeve of pipe that connects the offsets together is too short then borrow a bit of sleeve (down pipe) from off the running outlet as you don’t need all of that as you have room to raise the offsets.

Will need a stop end and snap the outlet back on as it looks adrift.
You will need to check brand as all guttering is not the same.
