How can I control 4 lights from one switch and one of the 4 from one switch So i can have all the lights on or just one I have been tring to get my head round this all week I just feel I am missing something obvious like it cant be done

It can be done. Just use a 2-way switch for the light that you want controlled individually. Feed L1 with a switched live from the switch that controls the other three lights, and feed L2 with a permanent live. The common terminal will then be the live feed to your single light fitting.

Neutral and earth will be common to all the fittings.
