Hello, a complete newbie to this forum so apologies in advance for any silly questions or comments. I have a Halstead Finest Gold, about 10 yrs old now. The CH has stopped working and I'm not sure which way to go. The boiler is showing some very peculiar symptoms. When I turn on the HW both micro switches (for HW and CH) are firing and I do get HW. When I turn the HW off both switches turn off. When I switch on the CH I get absolutely nothing at all. No sound from the boiler, no switches firing. The boiler has a mechanical clock which controls the CH, which I have disconnected but even with the thermostat set to high, there's no life from the boiler. On top of that, the diverter valve is leaking, could this be the culprit? Could it be an electrical and mechanical problem or is it possible that by changing the diverter valve the CH problem will also be fixed? Thanks to all in advance.

I would check the external controls are working before any thing else.

Thanks, but which external controls? All there is is a clock, and two turn dials temperature controls for HW and CH.

Please excuse my complete ignorance but what exactly do you mean by link? Do you mean I need to connect some pins together on the PCB? Which ones and can I use normal Cooper wire? Thanks.

yes a small piece of insulated copper wire, you do realise your working with 230vac ? if your unsure about what your doing I strongly suggest you employ someone that knows what they are doing.

You are correct, but I'd like to give this is a go myself. If this doesn't work, the I will have to I guess. But there is some satisfaction that one gets when a problem is solved without getting in a specialist. Which two pins should I connect and do the other pins remain unconnected? Thanks.

Why did you disconnect the clock and what did you do with the wires of the clock?

but I'd like to give this is a go myself.
Fair enough but you don't know what you are doing.

If this doesn't work, the I will have to I guess.
That would be silly.

There is, but through knowledge, not pot luck.

Which two pins should I connect
The ones that were switched by the clock.

and do the other pins remain unconnected?
If not needed.

OK, I figured out what was meant. On the PCB there is a dongle covering pins 2 & 3 to indicate the use of a clock, and by moving it over to pins 1 & 2 it indicates no clock. I did that and still no CH only HW. I read somewhere it could it be the air pressure switch which is located at the top of the boiler, but would that not also affect the HW?

Bridge out pins 4 and 5 to rule out the room thermostat.

When you have used the hot water there will be a delay of several minutes before the heating starts...this is normal.

Leave the combustion chamber alone....you have shown already that you are not competent to work on boilers. The fact that the boiler operates in DHW mode means that 99% of the boiler is fine.

Thank you that was very helpful, that's all I needed to know. I did as you suggested and low and behold the boiler fired into ignition.

Picked myself up a Honeywell wireless thermostat and within 60 mins had wired it all in and all is working perfectly. I now have a warm house, thanks for the concern Whitespirit66!

Thank you to all the helpful suggestions and advice. We're not all idiots!
