Hi,

Just about to replace a few light pendants with some more glamourous lights - NOT chandeliers.
However, I think that the replacements might be a little heavy for the ceiling.
Is there anyway to figure out whether the ceiling will be strong enough to hold rather than trial and error, as I'm not good at repairing ceilings ?
The existing pendants are standard plastic ones with single bulb.

9 times out of 10, the ceiling rose will be screwed into the floor joist..

stick a thin screwdriver through the ceiling in line with the screws to feel if you hit wood..

If you are lucky, the light fitting will be adjacent to a joist or will have a wooden noggin there.

If there is no wooden joist or noggin, you would have to reply on plasterboard fixings which are not great for heavy kit.

What type ceilings do you have (plasterboard or lathe and plaster?). How old is your house?

house was built in 1930s. Not sure what celing is made from, but unlikely to be plasterboard. anyway thanks for advice - coljack and lectician.
