Hearth for coal effect gas fire

I am re-installing a hearth, ready for a coal effect gas fire to be professionally fitted.

The vertical hearth stone is thinner than the depth of the rebate in the wooden fire surround. This vertical hearth stone was previously packed out behind with offcuts of foam pipe insulation - and these were jammed in the gap where the fire fits, before pointing over with fire cement.


Is there a more professional method of doing this? Or is scrap foam the normal professional method?

I normally dab the slab to the wall like a giant ceramic tile to the correct position so the mantel fits just right using tile adhesive, or Carlite Bonding, then pointup with sand cement or fire cement

Having moved into a new house - i'm witness to the previous owners DIY skills. It's been a rollercoaster but I'm happy to say i've not found anything quite as bad as that. Yet.
