Obviously, I am aware that this is not a DIY project, but wonder if there's means to fit a heat exchanger to the flue of a combi boiler?

When it's running, seems a terrible waste of heat to me and I would have tought that an exchanger could recover some of that heat from the vent, without compromising the fumes/emisions from the boiler.

Modern HE boilers already do that. On a SE older boiler you would be altering the flue system to accommodate your heat recovery gubbins and that would cause serious safety issues.

There is a manufacturer that does this very thing but the unit can ONLY be used with their compatible boilers and to be honest looks really unsightly, remember the savings that they claim are for HW only so not that great a saving on a normal sized combi, I have added a link so you can see how the principle works but this is only for your interest, as stated it can not be fitted to any other make of boiler

Certain boiler manufacturers Ideal, Ravenheat and Baxi
offer this as an option already.

Best value one is the Atag.

The cost of it in the Ravenheat and Baxi make it uneconomical
unless gas gets a lot more expensive. They charge silly money
for something that is quite basic.
