Hi all,

I'm fitting an heated towel rail in bathroom.
In truth, it's already on the wall, it's just not wired up yet.

The heating element is rated a 400W.

I was going to take a spur from a normal ring mains double socket to power this heating element and just wanted to check what gauge cable I should use?

In truth, I'm not actually going to do the wiring myself as there's a digital time switch involved and I don't understand what goes where.

However, I'm trying to do as much of the preparation as I can before I get the sparky in so I'm going to route the cables myself.

I just wanted to make sure I use the correct cable before I make the walls good again.

I take it just the same cable that makes up the ring main is the one to use? I can't remember what it's called but they generally label them by what they're used for in homebase anyway.

Am I on the right lines? (no pun intended!).

Thanks,

DIYC.

I wouldn't want to sign off work as my own if I hadn't been involved from the start. I suggest you sort out an electrician before you do anything so you can discuss how much he/she is happy for your to do and still sign off the work. If I was asked to connect someone else work without physically being able to see all of the runs I would walk away.
There are other issues such as RCD protection, Part P routing in safe areas etc that need to be considered for the work you are describing.
