I know this has been done to death but I've not really found an answer. We get what are probably sewer gases but not all the time. Sometimes it's more like the guy next door has the trots! Sorry!! Next door is not what it seems. This flat has been changed to a bed sit and a 1 bed with a stud wall between. Ground floor. It seems our shower and basin waste somehow joins up to his, shower is like a wet room, trap seems ok but can't see very far. I've bought a plug, also keep it topped up with water in case. Flushing the loo causes small bubbles to come back into the pan. Kitchen produces interesting aromas too. Washing m/c outlet travels down a flexible tube approx 200cm long into the sink waste, which in turn then travels some 180cm under the floor to drainpipe under concrete outside. There are no surface drains. The only stack is approx 80cm from this join, in the opposite direction from the other spaghetti junction bathroom plumbing. The landlord did it - enough said. But why is it ok sometimes?? Should I get a bottle of stuff to make sure there are no blockages somewhere that don't show up in the normal 'megga block' way? Oh, the guy next door has one of those macerator jobbies. Does that make any difference? Sorry for the long post. Trying to put all info down.

If the guy next door only has a macerator toilet it is in breach of the building regs.
