Hi,

We've had a load bearing wall knocked through partially, the wall is 2.4m long and now has an opening of 1.6m in it. Initially the builder quoted for an rsj but as opening was made a bit smaller than original quote he has used a concrete lintel instead as says an rsj is not necessary.

The wall is in a 3 bed semi with a wall above and supports the joists upstairs too.

Anyone's thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Ask him what kind of saving - cost wise are you getting (concrete lintel cheaper than steel beam).. oh structurally probably ok so long as he has done his calcs right..

Reminds me of the time we specified a 215x100 Naylor Hi-spec lintel...and the builder put in two 110x100 economy lintels on top of each other thinking they would be just as strong
