Help needed with self cutting tap ASAP!

I am trying to fit a washing machine and bought two self cutting taps as the box said they were easy to fit, and I'm sure they are but mine don't seem to be that straight forward.

I have attached the bracket bits to the pipe (15mm copper) but I can't for the life of me get the bit to screw in, I have been on my knees with my head under the sink for over two hours and it hasn't been fun. I have tried WD40 (as I read on another forum). It seems that the rubber washer is pushing up too much and not leaving enough space for the tap to thread, if that makes sense.

I would be very grateful if someone could advise me as I fear I am going crazy!

I had started to figure it must be the devil's work, but I am more of a devil then God/Jesus or a plumber so the idea of doing a "proper" job is far beyond me.

Fit the rubber washer around the cutting screw first, then assemble around the pipe and cut merrily away

Does it screw into the body at all and comes to an end, or can you not get it started at all?

gas: I can't do that coz the washer goes on the other side on the bracket (next to the pipe)

dex: It's not screwing at all, it's as if when the cutter bit is touching the pipe the male thread is not touching the female. When the bracket is not attached to the pipe it screws together fine.

The only way I have got it to half work is by loosening the brackets all the way then it screws in then when I tighten the brackets it pushes the thread back out.

Yes I know but fix it over the cutter then attach it to the pipe.
