hi, in my bedroom i have a light which can be turned on/off using the wall switch or a ceiling light pull. the rope on the ceiling pull has snapped so we have bough a new ceiling light pull to replace it, we were advised by the salesperson to get a two way switch. the old light pull has been removed and we wrote down the colours about what went where but we have now lost the paper!! there are four wires showing, a green/yellow one, red, black and a grey one which looks like it is covering another red one. on the switch you have L1, L2 and com and obviously the earth bit. which wire connects to where? thanks

You need to take the wall switch off and have a look there. Whatever is in L1 and L2 on the wall switch, connect the same on the pull switch, then put the remaining wire in COM, and the CPC ('earth wire') to the earth terminal (if it has one) 
on the wall switch there is nothing in L2, in L1 there is a black wire and in the Com is the grey wire (covering over the red). The red wire is not in use.

Something's amiss here Shazza. For two-way switching to work you need THREE wires connected to each switch. Did it work properly beforehand? ie you could turn the light on OR off with EITHER switch?
Can you upload a few photos of what you have at each switch?

Perhaps that wire snapped off from the L1 terminal. Have a close look to see if a bit of wire is left in the terminal.
Was the end of that wire blanked off with a piece of tape or similar? Or folded out of the way?
It may have been disconnected for some reason of course.
In both switches, I would expect to see the grey in the common, red in either L1 or L2, black in remaining L1 or L2.

ok will have a look, it has not been taped off or folded, it just looks like it has been cut off.
no it didnt work properly before, you couldnt turn the light on and off with the ceiling switch.

Unfortunately then it won't work properly now either - unless you can get some three core and earth between the pull switch and the exisitng wall switch.

You should be able to use the existing cables, assuming that one wire is supposed to be in L2.
