This morning I came down and found the heating wasn't on, no pilot light- and a pool of water underneath the wall mounted garage situated unit, still dripping from beneath the unit. It has been -5 here on occasion (southern hampshire!). The indicator lights are on ie there's power to it and by pressing the reset I could get some noise from within the unit but no firing.

Did the pipework that chucks steam out of the external vent freeze up? Is that where the water is coming from? Or is it likely the water pipes within the unit itself have frozen and (horrors) burst?

Doesnt sound good , i would take off the outer case and see if you can see if there is any damage , dont think the water would have come through the flue .

DONT take the case off if youre not a qualified gas engineer.

Have a look above the boiler to make sure the flow/return pipes are not leaking/split. If theyre ok and it seems to be inside, get someone who is gas safe to look at it.
