help - the ever flushing closed coupled cistern

Hello,

I have just moved in to my house and it has a close-coupled cistern. When I press either of the buttons on the top, the flush works and then continues to go for some time - 3-5 minutes.

Is this right? I can't imagine it is.

What is wrong and what do I have to do?

yes it a push button, assume one for smaller, one for larger flushes
