We have a recently installed Worcester Greenstar 12i/24i.

Today hubby has installed a new rad upstairs. He emptied the system using a hose from downstairs rad, one nearest to boiler.

How do we refill it and get pressure up?

Total novices, so please be gentle!

Thanks in advance.

Is it a 12i or 24i?
"We have a recently installed Worcester Greenstar 12i/24i" I take it it was installed by a registered engineer?

Anyway...it is a system boiler, which is pressurised.

1/first locate the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler..the system should be filled to approx 1.5 bar, AND NO HIGHER.

2/To re-fill the system it will have a "filling loop" (silver hose from cold mains to central heating pipe) this should be located under the boiler,to fill, open each valve on the loop slowly unit 1.5 bar is reached then shut both valves off. Vent downstairs rads first, then upstairs, refilling as you go. remember 1.5 bar is the operating pressure. once done, turn heating ON and check for leaks.

The filling loop hose may be clipped next to the boiler (as per regs) if it is just connect it to the two valves under the boiler and fill as above. Has your fella added protector to the system? He must do this before filling. I assume he used compression joints on new rad..cause if he used end feed the system will need flushing also.

I thought they all had the plastic key filling loop method.

You shove the key in underneath between the 2 black plastic filling loop nuts, turn the key then open the nut by hand to fill as required.

Pete

i thought they only did the key on the CDI range? To be honest, since they introduced the plastic jigs on the worcs I stopped fitting them, after a few occasions of the plastic crossmember clamps (with the spirit level lol) snapping, i stopped using them.

Thanks for replying. Yes it was installed by an engineer.

1. We have located the pressure gauge and we are aware that it has to be no higher than 1.5 (thats about all we do know!)

2. I think we have found the 'filling loop' and will do as you suggested.

He hasnt added any protector to the system. How does he do this?

and yes compression joints on new rad.

Thanks a million for your help.

Hi Pete, this is what we are finding very confusing! Everything we have read online refers to 'inserting keys' and grey values etc, which we dont seem to have!

AFAIK your boiler is a system boiler so it will have no built in filling loop.

The filling loop, or what i assume to be the filling loop (2 black valves and silver flexi pipe) is located upstairs next to the immersion heater???

We also have 3 metal thingies on the underneath of the Worcester

one on the right has a picture of a tap with an arrow pointing up.
one in the middle has a picture of a tap with an arrow pointing down.
one on the left has a picture of what looks like a rad with arrow pointing down.

What to do next??

Turn the black taps on till pressure gauge goes up to 2 then bleed the rads refilling as you need to as you get near to last rad requiring filling try and keep gauge to around 1 to 1.5

We have turned on the black taps, pressure gauge isnt moving on zero and no more water is coming through the black taps. The boiler is on, but hot water and heating is set to off,is this correct?

try them in various configurations as one may have already been on and you have turned it off

Water was passing through when first opened (you can hear it when you turn the upper black valve half way), but it then seems to stop ie you cant hear it when you turn the black valve halfway.

We have vented and refilled rads too.

Pressure doesnt rise at all and when hot water/heating is turned on, boiler sounds like it is struggling to pump water.

Should we drain the system and start again or is this a waste of time?

Errr... could the filling loop thats upstairs perhaps be for the old system that has been replaced by the new boiler?

Give your installer a ring & ask how to do it....
Simples...:D
