Slightly silly question, but a genuine one - did the previous owner leave you with the pilot lighting instructions?

Aren't lighting instructions printed on the back of the cover in front of the controls?

On a 551 you push in and hold the grey knob on the gas valve for 30 seconds while you press the push button spark generater on the left of the thermostat dial a few times. Stick your head under the fire and you should see if its sparking, mind you if its quiet you will hear the gas burning anyway.

Ollski I nearly read you advice as 'stick your head in the oven'
