Hidden alarm cables

I've recently found theres a few alarm cables already installed in my house, yet no alarm was ever fitted, 3 cables appear in a box in the understairs cupboard, found the end of one of them in the loft, obviously for a bell box, but havent managed to find the other two, I'm guessing they might be for PIRs or maybe a door contact.
Is there anyway to put a signal down the cables and use a detector of some sort to find them? Don't really want to get into pulling bits of plaster or coving off.

yes there is.

the cost of a cable tracer is however more than a roll of new cable, also what do you do when you find the end is burried in the corner or has been cut en-route?
