Hi

I have a 4 yr old Britony Combi Chaffoteaux & Maury wall mounted boiler.

This morning at 5.30 a.m. when heating cuts on it started howling/moaning at high pitch. So I turned it off.

This evening I have turned it on and the problem is still there !!

HOT Water Only - it howls and pressure 0.7 bar.

HOT Water and hot tap over half on no Howl and pressure stable at 0.7 bar

Central Heating on (need it cos flipping cold !!) and it Howls and pressure drops to 0.1 and still goes - howls a bit more high pitched I think ....

So Turned CH off -

Any thoughts - and if so any ideas which knobs do what ??
Thanks :(

hi I read a few other comments and I found the valve that adds water and therefore pressure to the system - its now at 1.0 bar and makes no noise with water and CH on - great !!! - hope its not leaking somewhere - will keep an eye on pressure ! - great site - happy purring Britony now ! :p

Hmmmm I'm glad its not making a noise, but it should work ok at 0.7 bar. Have you had it fully serviced (i.e. not just a spill test....) in the last four years ?

Hi

Its not been serviced - I moved in two months ago and the service record is blank - so suspect not been serviced and it WAS Howling again this 5.30 a.m.m but okay tonight and pressure at 1.0 bar when HW and CH heating on....... looks like a service due .....aghhh all your hear is horror stories about cowboys with lighters investigating a gas leak !!! sure is 000.1% of the boiler fixers - can any one recommend a good and not expensive (mortgage rate did just go up :) ) boiler service person in Barnoldswick / Colne (Lancashire) are - cheers

I'd recommend phoning Chaffoteaux & Maury and asking for someone who is familiar with the boiler to give it a good going-over. Yes it will be a bit pricey, but then if you haven't spent anything on it for the last few years, you can work it out as an annual amount and it should put things in perspective.
Or you can look for a local 'combi specialist' as some chaps are advertising themselves.
Just don't phone a '24 hour call out' agency cos they are expensive.
BG are good, but again have a range of skills, they're not all put through heating engineer school by Jim Royle like the advert suggests.

I have the same boiler with a similar problem.

When just CH is on the boiler runs almost silently and works exactly as it should do.

When the DHW is used (regardless of CH being on) it starts quietly and then after 30 seconds or so starts a horrible moaning noise as though something is vibrating violently inside. Turning the DHW temperature control down to halfway has reduced the noise but it's a bit worrying. I'm trying to decide between getting it fixed or replacing it...

Hopefully you have read the posts above and ensured your boiler is pressurised to about 1.5 Bar.

It sounds as if it may be scaled up or the gas settings are well out of adjustment. Have you had it properly serviced regularly?

It could probably be repaired by a competent engineer but as its getting older and not a very popular model then it may be time to consider a replacement which might cost about £1500-£2000.
