I'm wanting to browse DIY security products ie PIRS and basic CCTV and pick the brains of the people selling them with a view to making some purchases.

UK wide would Maplins be the best place to do this or do other retailers exist that people recommend?

shouldn't take too long to do that :D

You'd be better communicating with a specialist alarm system supplier and get 'genuine" information

:) yes ok I think I understand the Maplins factor! Its just that in a shop enviroment you can physically look at the products and get a feel for how they work whereas via the net its a bit blind.....

The stuff available on the high street is generally consumer grade tat. If you know what/where to buy you can get much better kit for not a lot more cash.

The Swann stuff from Maplin is awful.

What are you hoping to achieve? Give us a clue and somebody will be able to point you in the right direction.

thanks for replies, sorry for leaving this thread hanging - I kind of think its lazy to post up requirements and expect people to reply with what I need hence my question about where I could go to suss it out for myself.

Anyway - its for an outside sectional concrete shed 20' x 10' 20' away from our house. The outbuilding has one door and 2 opening UPVC windows. I want to secure the door and windows with wired contacts also a couple of cameras on the side of the house overlooking the shed and garden. Ideally I want to be able to have a monitor for the cameras in the house thats on all the time, also the means to access the cameras remotely via a phone ( I can forego this if too expensive) also any intruder alarm to be silent at the point of break in but sending an alert inside the house or to a mobile phone.

I'm guessing wired contacts on window etc is better than wireless?

Also, I dont want to buy stuff that breaks in 18mths time. I always prefer to pay a bit more for better quality (but not too much more!)

Would be good to have a list of manufacturers that can be relied on for good products. I already know Swann from this thread then to be crap :)

just had a quick read, your wanting to alarm a shed and have cameras on it.

Hard wired is the best option if you can get them to the outbuildings and the cabling is adequately protected.

You don't have to have a sounding bell box, many modern alarms will allow a bell delay where its delayed, and no bell connected to the system then no sound.

You can use the bell trigger in the alarm to fire a dialler if you going for a panel that doesn't have outputs or a communicator that is built in or plugged on.

There are many ways to achieve this with many different products, it then comes down to budget and exactly what you want from the system.

Remember that an alarm and cameras will not "secure" your garage - it will merely tell you when it's being broken into and how they did it (and, possibly, who did it). Bolts, bars and locks will stop people getting in... And a bellbox will discourage them!

(Just don't tell my boss that I said so! :) )

@82

you can only do a few things

1. make it harder to break in
2. have an alarm to notify that someone is breaking in
3. cctv to see who is breaking in

if you have an alarm your less likely to be broken into
if you make it difficult to break in your less likely to be broken into
and if they are seen on cctv they are less likely to break in

but it doesn't mean they wont break in, but it become a more professional type of break in and it has to be worth it. Safety deposit boxes a recent example of worth the effort.
