hi all

currently have a hipped roof on the 3bed semi

Im planning on extending over the garage and changing the roof to a gable end which will increase loft space for when i convert it

in doing this will the entire roof wood need to be replaced?

Depends.

The simplest way to extend an existing roof is to build a lay-roof onto the existing rafters. This means that the existing hip end would have to stay along with the purlins etc. The useable space would be hampered by climbing over a purlin and struggling between rafters.

However, it is possible to re-design the existing roof so that you could remove the hip end but this would mean either re-building most of the roof or fitting say a steel purlin the full length across both new and existing roofs.

i guess steel perlins 8m long is not going to be cheap
