We want to put 4 downlights on the 4 fence posts we have in the front garden, just to illuminate the driveway a little. We've been told to get some hituf cable for this is this correct? A friends has offered to do the work but we just wanted to check, as someone else said to use SWA cable

In days gone by, clipping cables to fences was not allowed. I'd like to think we have moved on from the regs in 1966...The 14th said:

B126 Consumers' wiring intended for operation at low....voltage.......for distribution between a building and.......another building, shall be in the form of one or more of the following systems. Such wiring shall not be installed on fences.

(i) Heavy-gauge galvanized steel conduit...

(ii) MICS cables...

(iii) Armoured and served cables...

(iv) Lead-sheathed cables.

I have not found anything that directly prohibits it in the 17th, although there are other more general regs covering issues like that.

I'm sure that there are no explicit prohibitions - but, as you say, plenty of general ones. I would say that it really comes down to a case-by-case assessment of how much risk the cable would be at. Let's face it, few people would hesitate to clip a cable to a brick 'garden wall' (and I don't think any regs have ever prohibited that), yet there are 'walls and walls' and 'fences and fences' - I know some brick garden walls that would fall over if one leant against them, and some fences that would probably survive a hurricane!

Kind Regards, John

In my garden, the problem with Hituf would be the squirrels nibbling it!
We have lots of squirrels (and other nibbling creatures at times!). For nearly 20 years, we had inherited SWA along a wall (and partially a fence!) (and goodness knows how long it had been there in total!), but they seemingly didn't touch it.

My main problem with HiTuf is that I hate working with it - and would, wherever possible, prefer SWA any day!

Kind Regards, John
