Hello everyone

Am thinking of getting the new British Gas Hive 2 system as opposed to the Nest system as I will be able to control both my hot water and heating remotely.

A couple of questions:
1. Is it any good? From the reviews i've seen so far it is.
2. Installation. I've seen lots of retailers sell at £249.99 which includes installation but Screwfix are selling at £179.99 which I assume is the price ex-installation (not that they knew). Has anyone fitted a Hive 2 system as from what I've seen in the instructions it looks to be quite simple if you have a standard set up.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

I don't fit Hives yet, but for a heating engineer I am sure that it is very easy. I fit the Nests though.

But you seem to be asking if its easy for a DIYer.

That will depend on the capabilities of the DIYer. Like heating engineers they are not all the same!

Hi Tony

Thanks for your reply. Yes I was talking about it from the point of view of a DIYer. Worst case is I call someone in but I'm pretty OK as long as the power is off ;)

I really like the look of the nest and the smart learning aspect of it but at the moment the Hive 2 is ahead because of the hot water functionality.

Thanks

Dave

they are good and easy enough to install if you have electrical knowlage, some are almost a straight swap with some modern clock backplates with a few adjustments

If u go for the self install.
Follow the linking instructions EXACTLY to the word.
They are a good reliable unit. Once set up.

If u end up calling someone out it will no doubt end up costing u more than if u pay the £249

I must say I can see little point in controlling hot water remotely.

Modern storage tanks only lose 1-2 kWh per day and so once heated will retain their temperature for several days.

Although I fit Nests and have one at home, I am a little skeptical about their learning ability. It may be fine if you have regular habits but my lodger is totally unpredictable.

He is a little pissed off at the moment. The BT line and broadband has been off for two weeks now since a truck hit the distribution pole and the gas has been off since Friday as they renew the pipework in plastic.

There is a BT duct passing the house but they insist in replacing the pole on the opposite side of the road.

Yep I have lodgers too and the boiler with the control system is in their room so this would make life easier! Also RE remote hot water the amount of times someone takes a long shower on the weekend and low and behold there is none for me so I'm hoping I can sort this out!
