hold in gravel ?

Our garden has gravel in it in a square area. Not ideal but I don't want to spend the extra on paving in the meantime and we could lay down turf but that's a hassle to maintain.
The problem is that the gravel is held in by these orange edging slabs, which are old, break easily, and just generally look ugly. Kind of like this:

Easy to trip over. So am wondering what I might be able to replace them with - maybe flat stone type thing that can be walked on without breaking or maybe a cheap alternative to replacing the gravel ?

I wonder if that's rope edging? If made of a hard impervious material (like staff blue bricks) it's expensive and long-lasting.

nah, its a chep plastic thing, seen it in b & q
 
mini sleepers look good. easy to put in no mess and quick.
