I am needing to run some data cables from a cupboard to an adjoining shelving unit.

Drilling the holes is easy enough it’s through 2 x 20mm MDF walls.
It would make sense to have some some of ‘top hat’ style bush to line the hole.

Something like attached, but smaller (around 20mm) is there a name for such things so I can go buy.
Pic shown is expensive self lubricating bush, I just want something to line hole so it looks neat.

I would recommend drilling a pilot hole first, and then, if possible, drilling the larger hole from both sides to minimise surface breakout. Then consider something like @Tigercubrider recommended.

No one has mentioned rubber grommets?

Would they work in in 40mm thick MDF walls?

Surely, at best, if they don't fall into the hole, they will only cover 0.5mm of the exterior hole.

They work in metal socket plates because of the gap in the middle of the grommet (which holds the grommet in place).

AFAIK, they are only used to reduce the risk of the metal cutting through the T&E in metal back boxes.

Cat 5/etc running through MDF doesn't need protection from
abrasision.

Would what work?
