Hi , I'm new to diy and need a bit of help,

The wife has decided she wants a hole in the back off a brick to store a gate key, how can I drill a hole half way into the brick from the end?

I usually drill them in the centre brick of the arch above the front door, which is the traditional place for the hole. That's why it's called the key brick.

You need the "Home Handyman Encyclopedia" (Hamlyns; 10th edition)

There's an entire chapter describing a step-by-step method of drilling the sides and backs of bricks for gate-key holes. It also includes the materials and equipment needed.

That book's out of date now.
Drill a hole slightly bigger than the key, and then countersink a bigger hole the size of a wine cork. Soak the cork in the red wine so it's the same colour as the bricks, and plug the hole with the key inside. Find a good hiding place in the garden for the corkscrew.

FFS - get a proper, sturdy, combination key safe and fix it to the wall with sleeve anchors.

Anything else will leave you uninsured when (not if), chummy finds the key and lets himself in.

Plan B - stop f*****g about with pathetic mickey mouse alternatives just to save a few quid.
